Résumé Tips
Your
resume is a marketing tool! Since it only takes a handful of seconds
to make a first impression, don’t overlook these important tips.
1. An objective is not necessary if you are using the same resume for various
positions. If you decide to include it, make it relevant to the position you
are applying for.
2. Use plain English. Sometimes big words are not always better.
3. Include dates of employment versus a skills based resume; leaving them off
looks suspicious.
4. Do not include marital status, personal interests, health status (even if
you are in perfect condition), age, and recreational activities.
5. Two page resumes are acceptable.
6. Unless you have just graduated from high school or college, do not list
classes taken.
7. Do go back 10-15 years for your employment history. Beyond that is not necessary.
8. Be specific. A resume should include work experience, education, specific
skills, and current volunteer information. It doesn’t need to be a document
highlighting every detail of your career.
9. Resumes absolutely need to be free of errors. Proofread even the resumes
you have professionally done.
10. Include a cover letter with your resume.
11. Avoid using I.
12. Use action verbs to describe your previous responsibilities.
13. Less is more!
Your resume tells the story of your work history and career. In every interview
you will have to convey that story, so make sure you are representing yourself
accurately.
